Doha (QAT), 22.10.2021: In a battle of giants, Australia’s Kyle Chalmers on Friday emerged on top when he won the men’s 100m freestyle final ahead of Russian star Vladimir Morozov on day two of the FINA World Cup Series Doha 2021.
Chalmers clocked a time of 45.03 seconds at the Hamad Aquatic Centre, with Morozov nudging to the second spot in 46.31 seconds. Korea’s Hwang Sunwoo finished third (46.46 seconds).
“I am very, very happy. It has been a rough week since Budapest. My shoulder has been giving problems. That was a fast time. That’s a half second (off the record). It was very close (to the world record of 44.94 seconds),” Chalmers, 23, said.
In the women’s 100m breaststroke final, Russia’s Yulia Efimova edged past South Africa’s Emily Visagie in the penultimate final of the night on Friday. Efimova, 29, clocked 1:06.08 for the gold while Visagie grabbed the silver in a time of 1:06.92. Korea’s Suyeon Back placed third (1:07.35)
“I did a great morning session. I felt better all day and I hope to feel better every day. I hope I have speed tomorrow also,” Efimova, a six-time world champion, said.
Japan’s Daiya Seto proved to be too hot a target to chase as he finished the men’s 200m butterfly final ahead of Kregor Zirk of Estonia and American Tom Shields. Seto, who won the men’s 100m medley final on Thursday, on Friday clocked 1:49.76.
Also on Friday, South Africa’s Pieter Coetze picked up his second gold in Doha in as many days when he won the men’s 50m backstroke final in a time of 23.13 seconds. Szebasztian Szabo (Italy, 23.55 seconds) finished in second spot while Korea’s Won Youngjun (23.70 seconds) clinched the bronze
“Nice way to start a Friday, yes. I am happy with the time here. Just enjoy racing here. I am enjoying Doha. I will be going to December World Championships,” Coetze said.
Madison Wilson of Australia retained her fine form from Thursday by winning the women’s 200m freestyle final on Friday. Wilson clocked 1:53.54 and finished ahead of Katja Fain (Slovakia, 1:54.51) and Annika Bruhn (Germany, 1:56.29).
“I have just one race after this and I was trying to bring it home by pacing it well,” Wilson said.
South African star Matthew Sates picked up another gold in Doha on Friday when he comfortably won the men’s 200m medley final (1:52.32) ahead of Danas Rapsys (Lithuania, 1:54.29) and Israel’s YakovToumarkin (1:55.56). Qatar’s Hamza Shalan (2:26.30) also featured in the race.
“Tried to pick up pace at the start of the race. It was good, (I) got the gold,” Sates said.
Dutch star Kira Toussaint clinched win in the women’s 100m backstroke final (55.79 seconds) finishing ahead of Michelle Coleman (Sweden, 57.23 seconds) and Australia’s Wilson (58.64 seconds).
“Very happy with the second gold. It has been a good season. I am content,” Toussaint said.
Kamminga shared the men’s 50m final (26.10 seconds) gold with Peter Stevens of Slovakia while Germany’s Fabian Schwingenschlogl settled for a bronze (26.17 seconds).
Dutch swimmer Ranomi Kromowidjojo won the women’s 50m butterfly final with a commanding performance (24.74 seconds) while Australian pair of Holly Barratt and Emma Mckeon completed the top three.
“I wanted really to swim well so I am very happy with my race. Always good to win a gold medal. It is always nice to swim here in a fast pool,” Kromowidjojo, 31, said.
